ANZIC management

Administrative arrangements

  • ARC is responsible for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the main IODP partners: the American National Science Foundation, and the Japanese MEXT. Australia joined IODP from 1 January 2008, and the MOU was initialed in June 2008, and signed in May 2009.
  • ARC is also responsible for a MOU with New Zealand, which officially brought them into ANZIC in June 2008.
  • Representatives have been placed in international IODP Panels and Committees.
  • Shipboard places are offered to Australian scientists through the Australian IODP Office when expeditions are approved, and applicants are subject to scientific assessment. At this moment Australia is fully entitled to 5 shipboard positions per year. New Zealand is entitled to an additional position per year.

ANZIC Governing Council

The Governing Council is a steering committee for the Australia-NZ IODP Consortium (ANZIC), and looks after broad policy. It provides scientific and financial oversight of Australian activities including those of the Australian IODP Office (AIO) and the Science Committee, in conjunction with the ANU Delegate (Director, Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University), because ANU handles the consortium funds and hosts the AIO. Its members in early 2009 are:
  • Chairperson: Dr Geoff Garrett
