ANZIC supports scientists and students from Australian and New Zealand member institutions to participate in international scientific drilling expeditions and projects.

Our financial support is designed to help ANZIC researchers make the most of these opportunities, from joining an expedition or project, through to post-drilling research, analysis and collaboration. This helps build the skills, global connections, samples and data needed to explore Earth’s interconnected processes, past and future.

What support is available?

Depending on the expedition or project, support may include:

  • Expedition and project travel
Support for reasonable, pre-approved travel costs associated with participating in a scientific drilling/coring expedition or project. This may include travel to and from a ship or drill site, official sampling parties, editorial meetings and post-drilling science meetings.
If you are selected or formally invited to join the expedition or project, ANZIC will contact you about the support available for your participation.
  • ICDP project drilling contributions

Subject to available funding, ANZIC provides contributions towards drilling costs for eligible International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) projects.
Projects in Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, the Southern Ocean or Oceania can apply for up to AU$160,000 (approximately US$100,000) per project. Projects elsewhere can apply for up to AU$80,000 (approximately US$50,000) per project.
    Learn how to apply below.

  • Post-Drilling Analytical Funding (PDAF)
Participants may also be able to apply for up to $25,000 in Post-Drilling Analytical Funding to support research following an expedition or project. Funding can support activities such as analytical costs, sample shipping, specialist software or data science expertise, research assistance, supercomputing, publication costs and relevant training.
PDAF applications are typically due within two months of the expedition ending and before the moratorium period concludes.
