Explore Legacy Samples & data
What secrets are hidden in the hundreds of kilometres of core collected over decades of international scientific drilling programs?
What research questions wait to be answered?
A wide range of legacy samples and data are available for study, from thousands of key drill sites across the globe.
Researchers from ANZIC member institutions can access a vast bank of physical samples from scientific drilling.
Sub-seafloor microbiological samples are also available on request, along with more than 20,000 microfossil samples.
In addition, data portals provide access to data and information related to scientific drilling. Member institutions can also access comprehensive digital site survey and ship-board data from IODP expeditions.
Several programs provide funding to support studies of this vast library of core, samples and data.
From the ocean:
IODP legacy samples and data
Samples and data from drilling beneath the world ocean with IODP (and previous programs) are available through a range of portals and repositories, detailed on the IODP3 website.
To help you find your way around, take a look at this comprehensive guide to what’s available and how to access it – created by Laurel Childress (JRSO).
There is also a slide deck on how to request samples from the Kochi Core repository in Japan.
Additional resources:
- Site survey data bank – repository for site survey data submitted in support of IODP proposals and expeditions
- A collection of files from and related to IODP expeditions is held on Zenodo.
- LILY database contains lithological information of core from expeditions between 2009 and 2019
- ISGN – a sample registry including core samples

From the continents:
ICDP legacy samples and data
Samples and data from drilling into Earth’s continents and lakes with ICDP are available through the ICDP Repositories.
